The Overhang

2020

The quad at Alfred State serves as a multifunctional communal space that must satisfy often fluid purposes. At its core stands The Overhang, a groundbreaking architectural form featuring an innovative louver system. This exterior skin, through a layered morphosis, serves as a breathable veneer that exhibits an alternate form while enhancing interior comfort. Each louver is linear but, together form a symphony of gentle curves. At night, this veneer succumbs to the lighting within, allowing the internal program to permeate into the surrounding campus; this selective transparency fosters a dichotomy between connectivity and perception.

Adjacent site additions transform the quad to foster social interaction. These elements are arranged to address the center of the quad and encourage inward-oriented engagement as a departure from the surrounding academic setting.
