Moynihan Train Hall Renovation
2023
In response to an RFP seeking design-build services for improvements to an existing rail access platform in Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station. Scopes of work included bringing a historic staircase, that connects a lower train platform level to the main concourse level, up to code, designing a 3000’ MEP soffit on the concourse level, and installation of a new mosaic art piece on the concourse level.
The design features a 2-hour fire-rated enclosure around the existing staircase, in accordance with Level 2 alteration requirements for vertical openings. The enclosure is finished in ceramic tile to provide a low-maintenance, durable finish for the high-trafficked area. A new mechanical soffit on the concourse level utilizes a system of removable voronoi-like panels. These panels, being 52% void, allows for easy maintenance through them, or major maintenance by unclipping them from the grid system to which they’re attached.
Cost estimate totaled just over $2.4 million, with a construction duration estimated at 268 working days. With this work taking place in an active train station, night-time work hours were prioritized to have minimal impact on commuters while maximizing job-site safety.
